because of the way it is set up -- if you can't cross, why not just keep it a double-double yellow without a white line? I think it is because the white line allows HOV to cross, while the DOUBLE-DOUBLE prevents non-hov from crossing into HOV. Again, otherwise, why even have the white line there since the double-double yellow would apply to both already ???? Also, in Utah, where I live now, they just decided to do DOUBLE WHITE -- you can't cross double white, just like you can't cross double-double yellow. But it's worse here, because they promised to put up signs telling you where to get out of the lanes and they haven't done it...and they are still going to cite people $92 if they are found crossing into or out of the lanes. Plus, not many people know what double whites mean. Having a double yellow in between two lanes going the same direction is ALREADY odd. They should be white...but in the picture above, I think they went with double-double yellow so you could distinguish the island from the single white. Otherwise, you would have a double white on the right side, and a single white on the left -- so three white lines. That would really be confusing. Who would the single white be for? Left or right lane? I guess they could separate them and put the double white together and the single white further apart. -Dave
